Φωτογραφίες σούχω και σήμερα ! Μην αρχίσεις και με ρωτάς, "ποιανού" και "ποιανής" είναι ! Δεν έχω ιδέα ! Πες πως σου μιλάω για "ανώνυμη" αρχιτεκτονική, λαϊκή των ημερών μας. Σίγουρα κάποιοι ειναι επώνυμοι, μα δεν τους ξέρω.

Νίκος  : Ελα, μ'επριξες

Τι σ'επριξα. Ολα εκει, απο την Αθήνα, τα δυο πάνω και δυο κάτω απο την οδο Πειραιώς. Το μεσαίο, απέναντι απ'το Θέατρο Κουν στην πάροδο της Αρεοπαγίτου, εκει που τα σπάσαν προχθες οι ανεγκέφαλοι...

Νικος: Τέτοιο πληθρινο τοίχο , που τον βρήκες ;

Δες , αιωρείται, κι'ύστερα μου λες "Καλατράβα". Αμ'το αλλο , το ερείπιο δεξιά. Γεμάτη αρουραίους θάν'η αποθήκη. Μα ετσι δεν ήταν και στον πόλεμο. Να σου τρώει ο ποντικός της μύτη κι'η ψείρα τα μπατζάκια, να μη καταλαβαίνεις τίποτε. Τι παρελθόν !!!

Νικος : Κι'ομως , θα φύγει κι'αυτή, δε  βλέπεις τις πολυκατοικίες απο πίσω.

Σίγουρα, αλλά θαύμασε οσο μένει ακόμη εκει ! Ιστορική μνήμη, ερείπιο, το μυαλο να δουλεύει προσθαθώντας να αναπλάσει μέσα του, να προσπαθεί να το δει οπως ήταν. Σιγουρα εχει την ιστορία του !

Νίκος : Ρομαντικός οπως πάντα ! Μια στο καρφί και μια στο πέταλο.

Στη μεσαία σειρά, ενα δείγμα πως θα μπορούσε να γίνονται τα καινούργια ετσι και γκρεμίζεται κάνα παλιό, και μάλιστα σε ευαίσθητες περιοχές που εχουν σωθεί μερικά απ'τα "διατηρητέα". Ειναι μερικά που οσο "ρετους" και να τους κάνεις να τα διατηρήσεις, να τα κρατήσεις οπως ακριβώς ήταν, ακόμη κι'αυτά , τα "σάβανα των προγόνων" που λέω αλλου και εχει πει κι'ο Γκαίτε, που εγώ δεν θάθελα να μένω ποτέ μέσα τους, με κάνουν κι'αντριχιάζω . Αλλά ακόμηγ κι'αυτά χρειάζονται, για νάρθουν κατοπινοί σαν τον άγνωστό μου συνάδελφο , γιατι ειμαι σίγουρος πρόκειται για αρχιτεκτονάρα, να κάνει το υπέροχο "σύγχρονο" ανάμεσά τους, να δείξει τη συνέχεια, ολη την ιστορία, απο παρελθόν στο παρόν και το μέλλον, που έδω το βρίσκουμε κι'αυτό απέναντι απ' την ερείπιο αποθήκη της Πειραιώς.

Νίκος : Πάλι με μπερδεύεις !

Το μυαλό πρέπει να μπερδεύεται για να ξεμπερδεύεται. Στο ξεμπέρδεμα πάνω, λές να πάω απο δω, μήπως να πάω απο κει, και βρίσκεις καινούργι δρόμο, κι'αν ειναι σωστος , βγαίνει "συνέχεια", το κουβάρι ξεμπερδαμένο μα ενα κι'εννιαίο, η πρόοδος μπροστα....Αλλιως, χάος η συννεσες μπέρδεμα σε ολα τα επίπεδα...

Νίκος : Δηλαδή εκεινο με τον "Keep walking" το θεωρείς υγειή συνέχεια της ιστορίας; Πρόοδο προς τα μπρός ;

Τώρα τι να σου πω. Μόνο υποθέσεις να κάνω. Αφου δεν ξέρω τι ακριβώς εξυπήρετεί το κτήριο. Μόνο ογκους, μορφες, κατασκευές και υλικά βλέπω, ενα κτήριο σύμβολο-Διαφήμιση, κάτι σαν εκείνα που τσίγκλησαν εδώ και σαράντα χρόνια τον Βεντούρι και τη Σκοτ Μπραουν με τον Ιζενούρ στο Λας Βέγκας. "Learning from Las Vegas" ! Ξαναρίξτου μιά ματιά !

 Νικος : Μ'αυτά ήταν  πριν σαράντα χρόνια, και στην Αμερική.

Ελα ομως που εδώ τώρα ήρθαν ; Λοιπον, ξέχασε τις ζωγραφιες και τις διαφημίσεις. Δες μονάχα την κατασκευή , την δύναμη, την ολη πειθαρχεία του στέγαστρου στην είσοδο. Φοβερος παρθενώνας, μάλλον "νοοτροπία Παρθενώνα", λεπτομέρεια, στα κουτιά του Λάς Βέγκας, χωρίς να εχουν να κάνουν τίποτε με κείνα τα σαββανιλίκια και τις καρικατουρες αντιγραφής στο Λας Βέγκας, που  κάνουν συγκροτήματα οικοδομικών τετραγώνων Καζίνο , που τους δίνουν τη μορφή της  Νέας  Υόρκης και της Βενετίας. Στην Πειραιώς, το "ανωνυμό" των δυό  φωτογραφιών κάτω , μιλάμε για πραγματική υπέρβαση, πιθανοτατα του άκρατα οφελημιστικού, σε χαμηλό πιθανότατα προϋπολογισμό κατασκευής, με υπέροχες λεπτομέρειες, ενα κτήριο Ελληνικό σύμβολο, με το καταραμμένο εκείνο ουίσκι πούστειλλε περισυ αν θυμάσε εκείνο το συνάδελφό μας στον νεκροταφείο του Κάλλαμου, σε πρόωρο "Keep walking"...!

Νικος : Κόσκινο τόχε κάνει το συκώτι του !

Καλός ήταν ! Μα δεν σήκωνε κουβέντα. Πάντως και τα τρία, ακόμη κι'ανώνυμα, ειναι μεγάλη αρχιτεκτονική. Μόνο που πρέπει να ψάχνεις να τα βρεις ....

Νίκος : Τουλάχιστον , η ιδέα πίσω απ'ολα αυτά να μείνει...

Τώρα τα λες καλα ! Ο καφες σε μένα !

Contemporary Vernacular

I have pictures for you today!  Don't start asking me who made these buildings; I have no idea . Just consider them "vernacular", the architecture of contemporary unknown architects, even though some of them may be well known to some people .

Nick: O K , go ahead !

Fine. The two on top row are from Athens, the bottom tow from Pireus street. The two in the middle row are from Phrynichou st., just accross the Theater Koon, which was attacked by vandals a few days ago....

Nick: Where did you find such great  adobe wall ?

It's almost about to take off, as if by "Calatrava" . And what about the ruin to the right.  This warehouse may be full of rats. Wasn't it like this during the war years? To have rats invading your body, biting your nose... the lice all the way up to your pants...and you , feeling nothing. Memories of the Spanish Civil war by George Orwell...Orwellian! what a past !!!

Nick: The warehouse is about to leave; don't you see the apartments behind it?

Of course; they'll tear it down soon; but admire it for as long as it stands there! Historic memory, ruin, the brain works trying to restore it , attempting to see it as it was in its prime; this building definitely has its own history !

Nick: Romantic as ever ! Yet everything goes.

In the middle row we have another story; A great lesson on how to make  new buildings in historic context; There are occasions of retouch, make them just the way they were in the past, and let the new tenants live in the cloths of their dead ancestors, actually as Goethe had put it  "dressed in the shrouds of the ancestors". Yet some people like to live  in such buildings. As for me, I'd never like such to live in such buildings. But even such buildings are necessary as a good architect acting among such conditions, could create something superb, contemporary and in harmony ,transforming those I don't like to a whole of historic continuity, just as the left building in the mid-row manages to achieve; A building that reminds me of all the lessons Erik Gunnard Asplund taught us with his expansion of the Goetheborg Court house.

Nick: I am perplexed again!

The brain much get perplexed sometimes, as in its attempt to clear things up often gives birth to the "new", to new interpretations and advancement. If the brain stays inert, we have either "boredom" , or chaos...

Nick: So, you consider advancement the "Keep walking builboard"; continuation of history? Advancement and progress?

As I don't know much about the building , I can make only suggestions. I see only volumes, form, construction and materials; I see a building "advertisement", a building buildboard something like those talked about by Venturi, Scott brown and Izenour in their "Learning from Las Vegas". Take a look at this book again.

Nick: But this was forty years ago ,in America !

Well, all this , arrived here much later. Forget the graphics and the adds. Just see the construction, especially the entrance canopy; A superb , contemporary, "Parthenon design mentality" ; As if you attached the triglyphs embroidery-like mentality to Las Vegas boxes ; Superb if you compare it to the actual Las Vegas Kitch imitations of New York and Venice. I consider the Vernacular Neo - Las-Vegas of the Piraeus st. superior to any "real Las Vegas" , a building "GREEK SYMBOL" ,actually tolerating that damned Whisky that sent last year our architect good friend to a premature "Keep walking" at the  Kalamos cemetery.

Nick: He had made a sieve out of his liver!

He was a good guy; but couldn't hear a word against drinking...Anyway, even though vernacular, these three buildings possess ingredients of great architecture;...You must only search to find them...

Nicl: At least, the idea behind them , remains....
